Accountable Government
As your Public Service Commissioner, I promise to represent the interests of the ratepayers. The management of Plant Vogtle is one example of how the current Public Service Commission has failed to manage electricity production in Georgia's best interest. The two new nuclear reactors should have been completed 5 years ago at a cost of 12 billion dollars. Instead, the Plant is still not finished and costs have grown to 30 billion.
The Public Service Commission has mismanaged Plant Vogtle, and Republican Tim Echols blaming the workers is wrong. Just recently, the Current reported how Georgia Power management misplaced their safety paperwork and forgot to submit it. This clerical error will delay construction 6 months and cost 1 billion dollars.
For too long, my opponent has been a rubberstamp for this nuclear project. Instead of performing oversight, Republican Tim Echols voted to allow Georgia Power to profit from cost overruns and work performed to fix construction mistakes. Without incentive to complete the project properly, it's expected that the Public Service Commission has not yet certified the completion of Plant Vogtle. Georgia ratepayers have already contributed nearly 4 billion dollars to build this project, yet they have not enjoyed one bit of electricity in return!
Georgians need a watch dog on the Public Service Commission, not a lap dog. It's time to require Georgia Power to finish Plant Vogtle.
